Welcome to this Month’s Natural Hair Blog Feature – Ms. Elizabeth Martinez

A Natural’s Girl Hair Story

Welcome to our April Blog Feature of a truly amazing naturalista, like a beautiful rose, every aspect of our girl is gorgeous, she is truly a sweet than honey.

May you enjoy her story:

Ms. Liz is our girl in Blue

Tell us a little bit of yourself, name, where you are from, your hobbies.

My name is Elizabeth Martinez.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles but now reside in Honduras.

My hobbies are, I love dancing and writing encouraging letter to friends and family.

What made you return and remain Natural?

I wanted to return natural for many years now, but I just couldn’t because my family, especially my Mom didn’t encourage it. The fear of my hair staying short, since my hair was very long at the time with perm or relaxer, made everyone scared. But when I moved to California for 2 years and later returned to Honduras, was determined to start a new chapter in my life. I felt that doing the Big Chop was a needed step or like a symbol of starting a new and fresh beginning.

Describe your Hair Care Maintenance for your tresses.

Here is the layout for this one:

  1. First off, my hair is only manageable with Purified Alkaline Water.
  2. Second, I make my own natural hair products with Coconut Water & Milk.
  3. Third, I also make my own mix of Aloe Vera Juice and Gel.
  4. Fourth, I also put make my own Homemade Coconut Oil.

So making and using all these natural products have helped a lot for the health of my hair. Using protective styles such as braids & twists and mixing all those products, works so well.

Can you name some of the challenges you have faced with your own hair?
I cannot say I have had many challenges. I think when you return natural, if you go into knowing your hair is free and wild, you will be ok. It is time consuming and it is not cheap to be natural, but it’s so worth it in the end to see the growth and the Beauty of our Hair.

Why do you truly love your Natural Hair?

I love my hair because it is Me. For instance, I can form and shape it any way I want, and desire and it works. It has allowed me to accept me as Me. I love my hair because when I see it, it reminds me of my parents as I have both textures from them in my hair and it’s just works, just like them hehehehehehehe.

Have you ever dealt with a hair tragedy, how were you able to recover?

Thankfully I have not had a hair tragedy. I think the only thing I can complain about is extensions with braids. I know it’s a protective style, but I try not to use as much, as I am a tender headed person so it damages my hair more than they protect it.

How can girls learn to properly care for their own unique tresses?

Trying different things and researching. I tried a lot of things such as store products as well as natural products to see what works best for me. So, in my case, practice makes somewhat perfect hehehehehehehe. Just have fun with your hair. Enjoy it while you got it, I say hahahahahahaha.

We thank you so much our Dear for you amazing story, the beginning may not have been easy but you rose up to the occasion and started a new chapter in your life and continues to be a truly beautiful one and your hair products sound absolutely awesome, you are going to have to share your hair recipes one day with us for sure. So girls, do you too want to know how to make your own Purified Alkaline Water, check out this link here on Healthy Kitchen – Alkaline Water, or reach out to Ms. Liz and ask for her own personal recipe.

Thank you all for reading our Hair Story from Ms. Liz and Thanks so much my Dear for participating.

Stay Safe, Remain Healthy and Best of Wishes to you All.

My Natural Hair Journey – March 2018 Update

Hello My Dears,

Hope you are all well and having an enjoyable evening.

My journey has been going relatively well, as you know, your girl is not in the best of health, always something but that is to be expected in the times we are living in. So for the past month, have been drinking Apple Cider Vinegar, 3 TBS per day in an 8oz glass of water to help me out with some health issues and it worked up and beyond the call of duty, hair loving it too so its a win win plus have been eating a lot more protein foods that I used to which is all good for the hair. Trying to cut out junk food completely, better said than done but will continue to keep at it and decrease my sugar intake, as we know, this is a journey and we adapt, change and keep on going, one day at a time and we enjoy the day as it goes and make the best of things if the day is not going well.

As promised, would share updates with you about my regimen, any tweaks, improvements, so here we go:

Updates on My 4C Hair:

  • Tresses are fulling out and getting thicker so sticking with my Simple Regimen for sure.
  • Biotin, helping to maintain my hair health, back to drinking once a week now, more than enough.
  • Overnight Oil Treatments, have had to adjust to a simple Oil Treatment before my Wash Regimen.
  • Rice Water Treatment will take more uses before I rate but so far so good, in 2 months, will update.
  • 2 Strand Twists remains my go to style, Mom does about 40 now for a more lasting style and love!

2018 To Work on Progress List:

  • Moisturize on a weekly basis , have to come up with a hair spritz for this summer heat that is coming.
  • Wrap tresses up at night with a silk scarf, is working very well, much more moisturized in the morning.
  • Rice Water Rinses, once every 2 weeks, have to let water sit for 48 hours, leave in for 1 hour then rinse.
  • Eat more foods with protein and keep my water intake up, at least 3 glasses of water per day for me.
  • Have to take extra care of my ends to avoid breakage and moisture is key, so this will be my focus.

2018 4C Natural Hair Regimen:

  • Product – Oil Treatments: Olive Oil, apply to each twist, undo, twists in larger sections, wash.
  • Products – Wash Day: Bonawell Shampoo, rinse, finger-detangle with Biotin Conditioner, rinse.
  • Hair Treatment – Wash Day: Apply Rice Water, leave in 1 hour, apply shower cap, then rinse.
  • Products – Styling: Hair Mix: Tresemme ConditionerCurls Unleashed Curl Defining Cream & Castor Oil.
  • Go to Style: My go to 2 strand twists. For special occasions, Updos, smaller twists or Twist Out.

These next months, as I continue on my hair regimen, will now start to take notes and track my rice water rinses to see if there are any differences in my hair, will check the hair to see if softer, then will check out shedding and hair elasticity, will also try to remember to take before and after pics of rice rinse to see progress a bit more. Apart from that, am also adding essential oils to my carrier oil which are Olive, the mint essential oil in Olive Oil is excellent for an itchy scalp. The lavender essential oil in Olive Oil is so soothing on your scalp, you will love.

Natural Hair Growth – Water & Teas for Our Tresses – The Results – Part 2

Hello My Dears,

Hope all are doing well and having a nice evening.

Here to report progress of my Water & Tea Challenge for these last months plus updates on My Hair Health Challenge:

  1. Water & Tea Challenge – The water part I have down well, drinking a lot more on a daily basis than I did before and yes, am seeing definite results, my hair is softer, can see she is moisturized and even on extremely warm days, such as what we have had, all I have to do is add a bit of water and she is good to go. I will try the Teas more often for the next 3 months, will do in the evenings, and try to aim for 2 cups, will do the Mint, Ginger or Hibiscus Tea, different one a day.
  2. NEW – Eating Healthier Challenge – See, told you I am serious, hahahaha. For those who know me, I LOVE junk food, its delicious but not good for my health in any way, fashion or form, so I found this awesome No Junk Food Challenge for 21 Days, you can google it and will be starting on this healthier lifestyle tomorrow for 2.5 months, my goal is to be healthier and lose the cravings for salt and sugar, will it be easy, NOPE, is it worth it? For me, YES, 1,000%.
  3. NEW – Biotin Challenge – Yes, let me explain. For those following me on IG, you will be aware that was quite ill, and due to the very strong meds to combat high fever, thyroid issue, etc, my hair got thinner and dropped out, which of course left me devastated. At this point, was about to BC because quite frankly, after you try 1,000 times and it fails, it is a disappointment and and was tired of fighting a losing battle but, thankfully due to my awesome family and my girl, Maircurlswas able to bounce back into action, thrown rather, hahahahaha but on it once again. So I then decided that for my tresses to regain their health, I had to do get help internally an externally so I researched Biotin and will post what I found and how I plant to use, am super excited about this challenge. So if any of you lovely ladies or gents have used Biotin before, please let me know how it worked for you and if you have any advice or tips, share in comments.
  4. NEW – Okra Challenge – As you know, am a firm believer in Okra to use externally on my tresses but for quite sometime now, could not find any here on the Island. Then one day, my Mom, while shopping found some in the Supermarket and she thought, let’s try it, you know the saying, Mother knows best, yes, its true!!! It has done wonders in my hair only after using for about a week, Mom could see the difference so YAY, click here for how to prepare for your hair.

If you have not heard of Biotin before, no worries, there are a million and one pages of it on Google, but here is my break down for you:

  • What is Biotin? A: Biotin is a water-soluble B-vitamin, also called vitamin B7 and formerly known as vitamin H. Is necessary for cell growth, the production of fatty acids, and the metabolism of fats and amino acids. Biotin assists in various metabolic reactions involving the transfer of carbon dioxide. It may also be helpful in maintaining a steady blood sugar level. Biotin is often recommended as a dietary supplement for strengthening hair and nails.- Wikipedia
  • How much Biotin should one take on a daily basis? A: “Biotin deficiency is rare and low levels may result in brittle nails and hair loss,” explains Dr. Stuart. “However, hair loss and brittle nails may have multiple causes and taking biotin supplements may actually halt this process and even help to reverse it.” The general daily recommended dosage of biotin is 2.5 mg (or 2,500 mcg), according to Dr. Richard Scher – For his complete review, please click, HuffingtonPost.
  • My View Point: As I researched, found many pros for this supplement so decided to give a try, will be taking a pill every other day, which is about 2,500 mcg per day and of course will be drinking lots of water as I have heard, Acne is a problem for some while taking Biotin so we shall see how it works for me. I love this brand in particular, had excellent reviews on Amazon and the ingredients are superb. My goal is to assist my hair internally for health and strength.

There you have it My Ladies and Gents, the plan is to stay healthy and maintain my tresses internally with having a healthier eating lifestyle and externally by applying Okra once a week on her. She will be in my go-to protective style, 2 strand twists, and post pictures at least once a month on my IG account, make sure to stay tuned Dears.
